Reception Etiquette

My wife says it best: "Common sense isn't".  In other words, to ask other people to subscribe to your value on what makes sense is like asking everybody to love asparagus.  Some people will, some people won't.  Common sense isn't common at all.

That's why it's okay to set up guidelines for your guests to follow.  On the invitation, it's okay to ask for the things you want.  If you don't want kids at the wedding, make a note of it on the invitation - but be sure to offer babysitting for those people who would be unable to come if they can't bring their children.  If you don't want people to wear blue jeans, baseball caps or sandals, put "proper dress preferred" or something along those lines in the invitation as well.  I've even seen it written out: "No blue jeans and no ball caps".
